April 20, 2026

The Society of Columbia Graduates has named Professor Harry West, Professor of Professional Practice in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, as one of the recipients of the 2026 Great Teacher Award.

Through his innovative courses, "Human-Centered Design and Innovation" and "Frontiers of Tough Tech," Professor West bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and pressing societal challenges. His classrooms are a hub for students across the School, reflecting the broad appeal and profound impact of his vision and mentorship.

Established in 1949, the Great Teacher Award is presented annually to faculty members from Columbia College and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). The Society’s Board of Directors selects recipients based on nominations from the Offices of the Deans. The award recognizes faculty members who excel in stimulating and inspiring undergraduate students, demonstrate a consistent interest in their students’ academic and personal development, and maintain a recognized standing within their academic disciplines.

Professor West joins a distinguished group of IEOR faculty who have received the Great Teacher Award. Since 1968, eleven IEOR faculty have received this honor.
