Professor Adam Elmachtoub wins Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching

Adam Elmachtoub, Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University, was named a recipient of the University’s Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Established in 1996, the Presidential Awards for Outstanding Teaching recognize faculty and graduate student instructors who have made a significant impact on the intellectual development of Columbia students. The award reflects a commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching, as recognized across the Columbia community. Elmachtoub’s research spans industries including e-commerce, logistics, and energy, with a focus on two central themes: developing AI methodologies that integrate prediction with decision-making, and designing simple, fair algorithms for revenue management and supply chain optimization. At Columbia, he is also affiliated with the Data Science Institute and DAPLab.

Elmachtoub earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Operations Research Center and his B.S. from Cornell University School of Operations Research and Information Engineering. His honors include the INFORMS Donald P. Gaver, Jr. Early Career Award for Excellence in Operations Research, an NSF CAREER Award, the INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Prize, the INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group Best Paper Award, the SOCG Great Teacher Award, and recognition on Forbes 30 Under 30 in Science.
