Martin I. Reiman

Martin I. Reiman is a Professor in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department at Columbia University.

He received the A.B. degree in physics and math from Cornell University, and the Ph.D. degree in operations research from Stanford University. From 1977 until his retirement in 2015 he was a member (and subsequently distinguished member) of the technical staff at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ.

His research is in the area of applied probability, with a focus on the analysis, optimization and control of various stochastic service systems, such as queueing and inventory systems. Much of this work, motivated by problems in communication, computing and manufacturing systems, involves asymptotics, principally fluid and diffusion limits.

Dr. Reiman has served as associate editor and area editor of Mathematics of Operations Research, as well as an associate editor of the Annals of Applied Probability. He has served as chair of the Applied Probability Society of INFORMS. He is an INFORMS Fellow and is a recipient of the INFORMS John von Neumann Theory Prize.

He was elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 2022.
