Agathe is a first year PhD student in the department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University. She graduated in 2017 from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris, France) with a major in Applied Mathematics.

 

Apurv Shukla
PhD Student

Apurv Shukla started his PhD in 2016. He completed his undergraduate studies from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. He is interested in developing efficient algorithms for problems at the intersection of optimization and machine learning.

 

Enrique Lelo de Larrea
PhD Student

Enrique Lelo de Larrea is a 2nd year PhD student at the IEOR Department. He graduated from ITAM (Mexico) with a double major in Applied Mathematics and Actuarial Science. After working for 2 years as a credit risk analyst at BBVA, he joined IEOR and earned his master's degree in Operations Research in 2017. Enrique's interests include Applied Probability, Monte Carlo Simulation, Financial Mathematics and Financial Engineering.

 

Fan Zhang
PhD Student

Fan Zhang joined IEOR in 2015. He earned his BEng in Microelectronics and BS in Mathematics from Tsinghua University in 2015. His research interest includes applied probability, simulation terminology and computational finance.

 

Fei He
PhD Student

Fei He started his PhD program at Columbia in the Fall of 2013. Currently he is working with Prof. Jose Blanchet on simulations of rough path equations, algorithms for optimal transport, distributional robust optimizations and their applications in financial engineering. Francois  Fagan
PhD Student

Francois works in machine learning - at the intersection of computer science, statistics and optimization. His research focuses on improving algorithms such as MCMC sampling, kernel methods and robust optimization as well as applications including sports analytics.

 

Hal  Cooper
PhD Student

Hal is a 4th year PhD student interested in machine learning, network science, and game theory. He has applied this interest to problems from a variety fields, including computational neuroscience, sports analytics, and finance. Through a Joint Study Agreement between IBM SystemG (IBM's network science research group) and IEOR, Hal's current research focuses on the development of scalable and interpretable game theoretic methodologies using graph database technology and recent developments in deep learning.

 

Irene Lo
PhD Student

Irene Lo is a 4th year Ph.D. student in the IEOR Department at Columbia University. Her main research areas are in the intersection of operations research, computer science and economics. In particular, she is interested in how to optimally allocate scarce resources while incorporating the preferences of strategic agents, and in developing mathematical and algorithmic tools to answer this question. She currently works in matching market design, with a focus on school choice mechanisms. Irene graduated from Princeton University in 2013 with an A.B. in mathematics. Jingtong Zhao received her BS in Operations Research: Financial Engineering from Columbia University in 2016, and is currently completing her PhD degree in Operations Research.

 

Julien  Grand-Clement
PhD Student

Julien Grand-Clement is a 1st year Ph.D. student in the IEOR Department; he graduated from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris, France) in 2016, with a Major in Optimization and a minor in Algorithms. He is currently interested by problems related to Robust Optimization and Computer Science. He works with Pr. Vineet Goyal on designing efficient approximation algorithms for Robust Markov Decision Process and their applications to health care planification.

 

Lin  Chen
PhD Student

Lin Chen is a PhD candidate in the Department of Operations Research at Columbia University. He studied Mathematics as an undergraduate student in Nanjing University. Lin Chen's research interests is in Financial Engineering (particularly Behavior Finance) and Sampling. His Ph.D. advisors are Prof. Jose Blanchet and Prof. Xunyu Zhou in the IEOR department.

 

Lingyi  Zhang
PhD Student

Lingyi Zhang is currently a first year PhD student in Operations Research at Columbia. She received her B.A. degree in mathematics, economics, and applied mathematics and statistics from Johns Hopkins University.

 

Mauro  Escobar
PhD Student

Mauro joined the IEOR Department as a PhD student in Operations Research in September 2014. Before coming to Columbia University, he received a BS in Engineering in 2012 and an Engineering Degree in Mathematics in 2013, from Universidad de Chile. Mauro is currently working with Prof. Garud Iyengar in Stochastic Programming. His main interests are Convex Optimization, Semidefinite Programming, Combinatorial Optimization, and Machine Learning.

 

Mingxian Zhong
PhD Student

Mingxian Zhong started his PhD program at Columbia in the Fall of 2013. Currently he is working with Prof. Clifford Stein on scheduling algorithms and with Prof. Maria Chudnovsky on graph theory. His primary research interests include Graph Theory, Algorithms and Combinatorial Optimization. He earned his M.S. in Operations Research from Columbia in 2013. Prior to Columbia, he received his B.S. in Mathematical Economics from Wuhan University, China in 2011.

 

Octavio Ruiz Lacedelli
PhD Student

Octavio started his PhD studies in September 2013. He works with Prof. Martin Haugh in the areas of machine learning, stochastic control and financial engineering. Prior to joining Columbia as a graduate student, Octavio worked four years in the field of actuarial consulting in New York. Octavio obtained his BSc (Honours) in applied mathematics and actuarial science from ITAM in Mexico City.

 

Omar El Housni

Omar is a PhD student at Columbia IEOR Department. He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique Paris, majoring in Applied Mathematics in 2015. He is currently working under the guidance of Professor Vineet Goyal on robust and adaptive optimization problems under uncertainty.

Raghav Singal
PhD Student

Raghav Singal started his PhD in September 2015. His research interests include analytics, machine learning, optimization, and stochastic modeling. Before coming to Columbia, Raghav completed his Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto (Canada). Raghav has worked as a financial quant for over a year and has played tennis at the national level.

Randy is a second year PhD student in Operations Research whose research interests lie in optimization and machine learning. He is advised by Professor Shipra Agrawal and currently working on reinforcement learning and multi-armed bandit problems.

 

Ryan McNellis
PhD Student

Ryan McNellis is a second-year PhD student in the IEOR department at Columbia University. He previously received his B.S.E. degree from Princeton in 2015, majoring in Operations Research and Financial Engineering and additionally obtaining a certificate in Statistics and Machine Learning. His research interests currently lie in the fields of machine learning, multi-arm bandits, and online learning problems.

 

Sai Mali Ananth
PhD Student

Mali joined the IEOR PhD program in Fall 2017. He completed his M.Math in Combinatorics and Optimization at University of Waterloo, Canada, where he worked on continuous optimization and data science. His research interests are continuous and combinatorial optimization, data science and machine learning. He is currently working with Prof Cliff Stein on scheduling algorithms for energy optimization.

Shatian is a first year doctoral student in the department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University. She received her BA in Mathematics and Computer Science from Carleton College, MN, in 2017.

 

Shuangyu Wang

Shuangyu Wang received his B.S. degree in math and physics from Tsinghua University, Beijing, 2012. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate majored in operations research in Columbia University, New York. His current research interests include optimization in revenue management and dynamic pricing.

Mr. Shuoguang Yang is currently a PhD candidate in Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (IEOR), Columbia University. Xinyu Zhang is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University, advised by Henry Lam. His research interests lie in stochastic optimization and extreme event analysis. He obtained his bachelor's degree in the University of Michigan in 2016, majoring in physics and applied mathematics.

Xuan started her PhD in the IEOR department in September 2016. She received her BA in Mathematics from Cornell University in 2014, and before coming to Columbia, she worked as a research scientist in a social neuroscience lab.

 

Yan  Chen

Yan Chen is a first-year Ph.D. student at Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department, Columbia University. Before that, he earned his bachelor degree in Mathematics from Tongji University and his master degree in Operations Research from Columbia University. His primary research interests include stochastic optimization, robust optimization, dynamic programming and stochastic control with applications in queueing systems, operations management. He is currently working with Prof. Ward Whitt in queueing approximations and robust optimization.

Yeqing Zhou is a Ph.D. student at Columbia IEOR Department. She previously received her B.S. degree from Fudan University in 2014, and M.S. degree from Columbia IEOR in 2016. Yeqing is currently working under the guidance of Professor Adam Elmachtoub on supply chain management.

He graduated in July 2017 and became a PhD student at Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, Columbia University in August 2017. He is interested in developing algorithms for dynamic learning and optimization problems with revenue management applications.

 

Yunjie Sun
PhD Student

Yunjie Sun is a 2nd year Ph.D. student in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University. His current research interests are dynamic pricing and revenue management, operations management, supply chain management, with applications to real world problems. He has won Honorable Mention on INFORMS Doing Good with Good OR Student Paper Competition in 2015 and he is also a recipient of 2016 Deming Doctoral Fellowship from The W. Edwards Deming Center at Columbia Business School. Previously, he received his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2015.
