The doctoral program is demanding and rewarding, often requiring students to juggle the roles of student, teaching assistant, and colleague. The following are a few areas of concern regarding doctoral student life.
One residence unit consists of one term, fall or spring, of full-time study. Six residence units beyond the undergraduate degree are required for the PhD. Continuous registration until completion of all requirements is obligatory. A maximum of two residence units may be credited for academic work completed at another university or in another division of Columbia University upon review and approval by faculty.
