Wotao Yin is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA. Before joining UCLA, he was an Associate Professor at the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia IEOR in 2006. His research interests includes numerical optimization and its applications in inverse problems, such as compressed sensing, image processing, computer vision and machine learning.
While studying at Columbia, he was a student of Professor Goldfarb and worked in optimization. He also held a part-time research position at Siemens Research, where he applied optimization to medical imaging and computer vision. He won the Morningside Gold Medal in 2016 and an NSF CAREER Award in 2008 and the Sloan Research Fellowship in 2009.
