Abstract

The talk will review the various job roles available on Wall Street for people with quantitative and technical backgrounds. We will talk about traders, quants, salespeople, research analysts, risk managers, and software developers, and discuss what these people actually do, what quantitative and technical problems they face, and the pros and cons of each type of role. We will also touch upon the typical organizational arrangements for technology areas in Wall Street firms, job titles, work hours, and other workplace realities.

Bio

Alex Kuznetsov is currently a Director in the Proprietary Trading Technology group at CSFB. Prior to that he worked at Barclays Capital and Goldman Sachs. His interests and experience include fixed income strategy, interest rate derivatives, electronic trading of fixed income products, and algorithmic trading systems. He has an active interest in educating his younger colleagues about the financial industry and its use of technology, and has developed and taught training courses covering these subjects. Before coming to Wall Street in 1997, Alex was pursuing an academic career in physics. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from USSR Academy of Sciences.
