ABSTRACT
This presentation will describe BHP Billiton's breadth of operations as the largest diversified resources company in the world at a time when the resources industry is booming driven by seemingly limitless demand from China and India. The mining process will be outlined and critical features of the value chain will be highlighted. The role and business model of the Mine Planning Optimization Team within BHP Billiton will be discussed, and Mr. Stone will also cover the important optimization challenges in mine planning and how they have motivated our initiative to develop an institutional relationship with the IEOR Department at Columbia University.
