Doctoral students receiving full institutional funding are eligible for full coverage of the cost of the university's Basic Health Plan. If a student desires to upgrade to a Comprehensive Coverage Plan, the student is responsible for paying half of the difference between the basic and comprehensive plans each semester. This amount is larger in the fall than the spring due to the period of coverage. The student needs to simply indicate by email that they desire to be covered by the comprehensive plan.
If a student desires to use another health plan outside of what Columbia provides, they must submit a waiver request at health.columbia.edu by the appropriate deadline, September 30 for the fall and February 1 for the Spring.
Doctoral students receiving full institutional funding are eligible for a 50% subsidy for dependent health insurance coverage. In order to obtain the 50% subsidy, the student must complete the Graduate Subsidy Dependent Enrollment Application. The completed form must be submitted to the Columbia Health Insurance Office, located in Alfred Lerner Hall, Room 503.
The enrollment deadline for the fall semester is September 30.
There are new procedures for students who plan to enroll a domestic spouse or domestic partner. For more information about the documentation and verification procedure, students can visit the Columbia University Health Services website.
Required documentation as outlined on the Health Services website must be submitted to and verified by the University's Health Insurance office located in 108 Wien Hall before the student submits the enrollment form and payment to Aetna.
