FE Practioners Seminar: Joseph Weisenthal (Bloomberg)

Schapiro Hall (CEPSR) Davis Auditorium

TITLE: The State Of Financial Media

ABSTRACT: The media industry as a whole has changed dramatically over the last decade. The digital revolution has ravaged legacy business models (most notably newspapers) and some of the leading names in news are companies that nobody would have ever heard of just a few years ago. Not only have publications seen dramatic turnover, but the ways in which people consume their news have evolved radically. Financial Media is no exception here. In addition to the general factors affecting news media, the crisis of '08/'09 had a lasting impact on the way finance is being covered. As old models broke down and once-favored experts became discredited, this created demand for new voices, including active industry practitioners who were most readily available on their blogs or platforms like Twitter. There's also been a surge in demand for charts, data, and macro themes that legacy organizations were ill-equipped to cover.  The talk will go over these trends and examine what has and hasn't changed in the industry.

BIO: Joseph Weisenthal is an Executive Editor at Bloomberg and the co-host of the daily TV show 'What'd You Miss?' which covers finance and economics. At both organizations, he's played a leading ole in helping to figure out finance news in the modern digital media landscape.
