Chen's primary research interest is in optimization methods for power systems operations. He is also interested in energy economics, machine learning, and algorithmic game theory. Chen obtained his doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from UC Berkeley. His dissertation focused on optimization methods for nonconvex QCQP, SDPs, and convex MIP as applied to problems in power systems. Chen has a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto. His work experience includes internships at the Ontario Power Authority and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Chen's hobbies are tennis, squash, singing and jazz.
